Offensive Goals
Click here to see a video message from Coach Littleton about our offensive philosophy!!
Goal #1: Shoot the Ball!
Offensively, the goal is to make more shots than our opponent. So, we practice shooting. We spend 50% of every practice shooting the basketball......every day! No exceptions! It makes no sense spending time to run a play if you can't make the shot at the end of it. If we practice an hour and a half, we shoot for 45 minutes. We want to have as many basketballs in the air with as many kids shooting those balls as possible. We want to see how many shots we can get up in the 50% of practice time we spend shooting. So, no goal is empty and no basketball is sitting in the rack. I've shared some of our HALF-COURT SHOOTING DRILLS and FULL-COURT SHOOTING DRILLS with you in hopes that you will use these in your practices. I'm also attaching our Full and Half Court Shooting Drills Master List. If you see a drill on here that doesn't have an explanation let me know. I'll get it to you!
Every single day I want our post players going through the Post Player Shooting Regimen...no exceptions!! This footwork and skill work is a must-do every single day.
Goal #2: Take Care of the Ball/Do Not Turn the Ball Over!!
This may seem elementary, but it very well could be one of the most overlooked components of the game. We tell our guys that there are two things that will get you pulled out of a game without exception, and one of those is turning the ball over (the other is missing a boxout). Every season, our season-long "Offensive Emphasis of the Day" is "Do not turn the ball over/Take care of the ball."
When someone turns the ball over in practice they immediately leave the floor (because he knows he's coming out) and he gives us five push-ups (a "brick") while saying "No turnovers! No turnovers! No turnovers! No turnovers! No turnovers!
Goal #3: Execute Secondary Break
We want to get the ball down the floor as quickly as possible on all makes and misses. Secondary Break allows us to do this. Click on Secondary Break to see an explanation. Click on Secondary Break Folder to see more drills used to teach Secondary Break.
I'm attaching the breakdown for our Double Down Secondary Break, although there are many other packages such as Screen and Roll Package, Post Package, and Trey Package.
I've also attached our Secondary Break Shooting Drill.
Goal #4: Run High-Low Passing Game Offense.
The basic teaching points of Passing Game are as follows:
1. Pass the ball to the first open teammate.
2. Reverse the ball from side to side.
3. Eliminate the dribble except to improve your passing angle.
4. Screen away from the direction you passed. No ball screens.
5. Square up with the basket in triple threat.
One of our favorite drills we use in teaching our Passing Game offense is Keep-a-Way Game.
